Peace Corps

Purpose: The Peace Corps is responsible for assisting countries with development at the grassroots level. The Peace Corps development strategy is aimed primarily at enhancing opportunities for youth, girls and women.  

Activities: In Cotonou, our development projects address small business development, community health and AIDS prevention, environmental protection and rural community development. Peace Corps Volunteers work with farmers, with nurses and midwives and social affairs agents as well as with national non-governmental organizations and international agencies who focus on health and environmental protection.  

Staffing: There are100 Peace Corps Volunteers currently in-country. They are dispersed throughout the 12 economic regions of the country. On staff, there are 4 Americans and 40 Beninese who work at the Peace Corps office.

Other Relevant Information: Peace Corps  was established in Benin in 1968 and over a thousand Volunteers have served in Benin over the past 32 years of uninterrupted service.
