The Political and Economic Section, which also operates Commercial Services, monitors a wide range of topics in Benin such as:
- Human Rights
- Democratic progress and elections
- Legislation
- Social and civic freedoms and religious expression
- Labor relations and student activism
- Governance
- Macroeconomic stability and growth
- Business climate
- U.S. investment and trade
The State Department issues three major reports for every country in the world, including Benin. The Political Officer is responsible, along with appropriate Washington DC-based officials, for drafting and editing these reports. They include:
